It’s that time of year again when the leaves start to change color, the temperature starts to drop, and the holiday cheer begins! If you’re like me, you may be starting to get excited about all the upcoming festivities, but also feeling a little overwhelmed at the thought of all the preparation that needs to be done. Don’t worry though, The Home Depot is here to help! In this article, I’ll walk you through some tips and tricks on how to prep your home for the holidays.

The first step is to declutter your living spaces.

Make room for all of your holiday decorations by getting rid of any unnecessary furniture or clutter. This will also make it easier to clean and deep clean your home in preparation for guests. For me it was all about transforming my daughter’s “Giant Playroom” back into a living room for everyone. So I had to sort through toys, donate things outgrown, and make space for the holidays.

Before

Deep clean.

Once your living spaces are decluttered, it’s time for a deep clean. Be sure to clean all of your floors, windows, and surfaces so that your home smells and looks fresh for guests. THE PINK STUFF Miracle Cleaning Paste All Purpose Cleaner is a great multi-purpose cleaner that removes dirt, grease, rust, and scuff marks. And as an added bonus it’s natural, cruelty-free, made with vegan ingredients, and has a fresh Rhubarb scent.

Clean-up is also so easy when you don’t have to touch the trash can to throw away the trash. The NINESTARS 21 Gal. Auto-Open Infrared Trash Can has a motion-activated lid for convenient, touchless operation.

Deck The Halls. It’s time to decorate.

Once your home is clean, it’s time to start decorating! Deck out your windows with Christmas lights, hang wreaths on your door, and put up stockings on the mantelpiece. Get creative with your decorations and set the mood for a happy holiday season.

For my space, I opted for hanging swags over wreathings in the house and tied a ribbon around the wire. These 26 in. White Needle with Berries Cone Artificial Christmas Swag from The Home Depot were the perfect simple elegance I was looking for in my eat-in kitchen. My tree is Home Accents Holiday 7.5 ft Sparkling Amelia Pine Christmas Tree. It is magnificently sparkly! And incredibly full.

I added a bit of holiday cheer by printing some abstract digital artwork that I made and placing it in this set of 4 StyleWell Black Frames with White Matte. Also, the Flora Bunda Ceramic Arrangement Reverse Christmas Tree Pot with Pinecones and Berries in White looks great on the table.

Create a cozy gathering spot.

Rearrange furniture to create new spaces for gatherings. If you have a lot of people coming over, consider creating a separate dining area or seating area near the Christmas tree. This will make it easier for everyone to gather together and celebrate.

I finally finished my eat-in Kitchen area. It’s the perfect cozy seating area off the kitchen where guests can sit while dinner or breakfast is prepared. I made this bench seating and paired it with two Noble HouseFrancie Grey Fabric Upholstered Dining Chairs. These chairs are super comfy and we love them.

I did run into a slight problem, in that my original table was a little too small to accommodate more than 2 people. So I did what I do best. I made a new table top. I headed to my local Home Depot center and grabbed 2 – 1x12x8 boards and cut a new, larger table top that I placed over the original table base.

Prep the kitchen.

One of the most important aspects of holiday preparation is food preparation. Make sure you have all of the supplies you need for cooking festive meals, from pots and pans to serving dishes and utensils. Set up a designated workspace in your kitchen so you can prepare meals without any fuss or mess. Did you know you can actually purchase small kitchen appliances from The Home Depot, online and sometimes in the store?

This year my go-to kitchen essentials are my Cuisinart Bread Maker and the NINJA Foodi 5-in-1 Indoor Grill with 4 Qt. Air Fryer, Roast, Bake, Dehydrate, and Cyclonic Grilling. These are serious holiday food preparation “game changers.” Everyone will be talking about the delicious food they had at your place when you cook with these.

Have fun decorating for the holidays. The holidays can be a stressful time with loads of demands. So don’t feel as though everything has to be perfect at all times. For example, sometimes your space will be a little messy. This is what my home looks like with kids during the holidays ;). But it’s ok. I don’t sweat the little things.

The holidays are not about perfection. It’s about the quality time spent with those you love. Just remember that as you prepare for the holidays.
