How to Transform Backyard into a Boho Retreat

Last year, I sold my old home. But before saying goodbye, I decided to give the backyard patio a complete makeover, turning it into a Boho retreat. Today, I’m excited to share every detail of this transformation with you.

After an entire summer of hard work, I finally finished my Boho backyard makeover, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! I’m thrilled to share all the details that make this space my favorite spot. Even though it took me longer than expected—because, well, life happens—the end result was worth every moment of effort.

The last time I worked on our deck, I put in this new railing using poultry wire. It was an economical solution that saved a ton of money. If you remember, I also painted the deck blue and painted an area rug to define the seating area. I enjoyed my time out here a lot in that outdoor living room, but I got tired of the blue.

So, I made another change. The goal was to create a boho coastal vibe. I love the coast and being at the beach, but I don’t live near a beach. I decided to bring the beach to me with a boho backyard makeover with a coastal vibe. This is my inspiration

Restaining the deck

First things first, I had to get rid of the blue. I wanted to bring in something fresh and vibrant. Something that would make it feel beachy. I stained the floor a woodland green and when you look at it, it gives the feeling and vibe of a coastal beachy environment. It changed the whole look and feel of my deck in my backyard area.

Furniture for a boho backyard makeover

After I got the deck restained. I went in search of the perfect furniture. Aren’t we always in search of the perfect furniture? While on my favorite site, Home Depot, I found this conversation set. It’s WICKER! Where I’m at in my life right now, wicker is my jam. Not that traditional wicker because it wouldn’t hold up outside for long. No, this set is made of plastic that looks like wicker.

The conversation set is nice and sturdy and the cushions are the best thing EVER! For accent pieces, I added pillows. Outdoor pillows are expensive, so this year I started buying pillow covers instead. I can change them out with different colors whenever the mood strikes me.

Another piece that I added to the deck is the wicker hanging chair. I have always loved seeing those hanging chairs because they remind me of my childhood. I remember growing up we had all these different wicker chairs and I remember the big round wicker moon chairs. The egg chair reminds me of that vibe and that was what I wanted for this boho deck makeover.

Bar area

I added a balcony bar table to the railing. It’s great for extra space when entertaining or just hanging out with a cup of coffee. Occasionally I like to work out here in the fresh air and it’s the perfect place for my laptop.

Plants for a boho vibe

Those of you that have been following me for a while know that I’ve turned into a bit of a plant lady. Every time I walked into Home Depot, I headed for the plant section first and picked up a new plant.

While working on the boho backyard makeover I started picking up more tropical plants and I bought them in different colors. Some with purples and greens and mixed them in with different flowers. I mixed them together to create a posh tropical beachy feel.

Adding sand to the boho backyard makeover

Now you may be wondering how you get a beachy vibe without sand. When my daughter is out on the deck she brings the sand with her sandbox. I set up an area for her to play with her sandbox and even put up a little inflatable pool.

Lighting

The most recent addition was lighting. We added some solar string lights and some solar lanterns around the furniture. Adding the lighting allows us to extend the time we spend out here to after dusk and I’m going to add some more lights out in the yard in the future.

Childproofing

I had to make sure this area was childproof and that my daughter wouldn’t try to head down the steps or fall so I added gates to both openings of the railing. They aren’t perfect, but they do the job of slowing her down when she takes off thinking she is going to go somewhere.

Here is the whole space. I love this boho backyard makeover! I can’t wait to spend time in this amazing space!

Am I done with this makeover? Probably not. This space is ever-evolving and I think I’m probably going to change out the coffee table to get something that is a little more toddler-friendly. Maybe a circular coffee table.
