Welcome back to another edition of Nap Time DIY. A series of simple DIY projects you can do in an hour or less while your little one sleeps.
Today’s project is a project any beginner DIYer can complete with ease. DIY faux floating shelves. They aren’t complicated to make, you only need 4 items to complete this DIY, and they will look like you bought them instead of making them yourself.
I prefer a sleek modern look for mine, but you could make them look more rustic if that’s how you roll.
Floating shelves are a great way to add a focal point to your space. They are my favorite way to add style to my home.

View the video below to see how to make your own DIY faux floating shelves. The full tutorial can be found below.
How to make and hang Faux Floating Shelves
- Cut two 20 inch boards from a 1×6 piece of pine board.
- Sand to remove the rough edges.
- Paint or stain the boards in the color of your choice.
- Pre-drill holes in the boards for your corner braces. I like this drill the best. You want to make sure the weight of the board is distributed evenly so I recommend placing the corner braces approximately 3-4 inches in from each edge.
- Attach the corner braces to your boards using the screws that came with them.
- Using a stud finder , find the studs in the wall to attach your corner braces. This will ensure that they will stay put when you add your decor items to them.
- Attach to the wall using the screws that came with your corner braces.
- Paint the corner braces to match the wall. This will help them blend in and not be so noticeable.
- Hide the corner braces by placing books and other decorative items in front of them.
And that’s it! You just made your very own DIY faux floating shelves.
What room will you put your shelves in? Will you make them modern or will you go more rustic? I would love to hear in the comments below!
