Things to Avoid When Moving Home

Moving is one of those exciting yet very stressful events in life because there’s so much to think about. And it’s completely understandable why – it is a process of relocating one’s life to another place and it can be a lot to deal with it, regardless of whether you move across the town or to another continent. Many people think moving is an easy DIY job but the truth is that’s how mistakes are made. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them.

Not planning ahead

Believe it or not, moving rush hour is a thing meaning that there’s a certain time of the year when everybody’s doing it and all moving services are probably booked. That’s why it’s important to come up with a moving plan as early as possible and book a truck, moving service, and everything at least three to four months in advance. The same goes for packing – supply yourself with enough boxes, tape, and make sure you pack and label everything on time to be sure your things will all be transferred safely.

Not taking the chance to declutter

There’s no better chance to get rid of all unnecessary stuff and declutter than moving since that will not only purge your stuff but also make packing easier. Throwing out everything that’s not useful anymore or donating it might be a perfect way to start your new life. You can even organize a garage sale and thus make some money out of it. If you’re wondering what you should give up and what not, just ask yourself: did I use this in the past year? If the answer is no, then you know what to do.

Not getting an estimate

If you don’t want any surprise once the moving day comes, getting an estimate from the chosen moving service is a must. This means that they should calculate the approximate costs of your moving and then the final price of it can’t be much different. Also, make sure you ask a lot of question about hidden fees. Think of moving as buying a new house or a car – you wouldn’t do it unless you know the exact price and fees. Avoid movers that act shady and the cheapest ones as well – there’s probably a good reason behind that price and you’re not going to like it.

Not protecting your stuff properly

Let’s be honest – the most important thing when moving is to have all of your stuff moved in one piece and that’s why packing it properly and having a good mover is essential. This is also why renting any kind of truck for moving is not a good option – you need a professionally equipped one to ensure your move will be safe and efficient. For example, expert behind City Removalist use trucks with carpeted ply panels and tie rails, as well as furniture padding and straps to ensure your stuff is protected.

Not checking on your insurance

Also, don’t forget to check on insurance – if anything breaks during the move, it’s important to know who’s going to pay for it, so make sure you know all the facts. Even if your mover says they have an insurance policy, you still need to take a good look at it and see what it covers. Also, some moving companies don’t have insurance for their workers so if they hurt during your move, you might be held accountable to pay for it. Double check every paper you sign – that’s the only way to be sure you and your belonging are well protected.

Moving from one place to another is serious business. There are plenty of things that can go wrong but, luckily, many of them can be avoided. Just follow these tips and good luck in your new home.

  1. I’m going to be honest, it surprises me that there are people who don’t know this! Having helped family members in a number of moves before I turned 20, I always assumed it a basic adult thing everyone knew how to do, like calling your bank and letting them know if you’re changing states, getting mail forwarded, planning for utilities to turn off when you’re done packing up, leaving out things you’ll need until the moment you’re done packing or the first things you’ll need when you arrive so you can put that box in last, etc. We’ve always packed up and hauled everything by ourselves (even the super heavy furniture), even when going cross country, so the idea of a moving service seems kind of alien! Definitely convenient, though. Great article, lots of practical information! 🙂
