The ToolBox Dude, here again, trying out another one of the ToolBox Diva’s tools. And this time, we are going outdoors to review the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty. Let’s go!
Last time I was here the Werner 5-in-1 Telescoping 18 ft. Reach Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder took me to new heights (Hahaha). And let’s not forget how the Husky Heavy-Duty 63 in. W 11-Drawer, Deep Tool Chest Mobile Workbench allowed me to achieve my best garage life.
My favorite pastime is gardening. I’m not ashamed to admit that I like to keep my yard neat and the edges nicely detailed. So I’m super excited about trying out the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Kit.
Assembly of the Trimmer
The Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Kit comes broken down, so you will need to assemble the product before use. The instructions to assemble the 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer was easy and in about 10-15 minutes I had the unit fully assembled and ready to go.
The kit includes an efficient charger and an 18-Volt LXT 4.0 Ah battery which reaches a full charge in only 40-minutes. This is the fastest charge time in its category. It provides less downtime and increased productivity.
The Test Drive
This trimmer features an efficient Makita BL Brushless Motor for longer run time, increased power and speed, and longer tool life. Hey, it’s a Makita, I expect durability, good torque, and long tool life.
The efficient brushless motor spun up nicely delivering 6,000 RPM for faster cutting. Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Kit or XRU12SM1 is equipped with Automatic Torque Drive Technology, which automatically shifts from 4,000-6,000 RPM depending on the density of the application. There are 3-speed options (4,000/5,000/6,000 RPM), so you can match the speed to the application.
The trimmer comes loaded with trimmer string the bump-and-feed trimmer head is compatible with 0.08 inch or 0.095-inch line. It offers this awesome reverse rotation feature which allows users to quickly clear the head of entangled grass and weeds. You know how much time you can lose time detangling your trimmer in some grasses. With this reverse feature, no need to stop and flip your trimmer to remove the tangled debris. Just press big “R” button for reverse. Press it again and you are back to normal weed trimming.
This trimmer comes with the Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT). XPT is a protective seal inside the tool and is engineered for improved operation in harsh conditions by channeling water and dust from key internal components.
This is excellent in the event, for example, the trimmer gets left out in the rain.
Here are some additional specifications on the tool, just you are interested in all this techy trimmer technical talk.
- There’s a rubberized soft grip that provides increased comfort on the job
- This device has an ergonomic and balanced design. It only weighs 8.6 lbs. with the battery.
- The Makita is equipped with Star Protection Computer Controls to protect against overloading, over-discharging and over-heating.
- Of course, the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer comes with Makita’s 3-year limited warranty on tool, battery, and charger.
Here’s What I Really Liked
What better time than now to start reducing my carbon footprint and noise pollution than now. The Makita 18-Volt LXT Brushless Cordless String Trimmer I can do just that. It has zero emissions and when in use, it’s so quiet. This is a welcome solution to my weekly lawn care routine. It’s also ideal for precision trimming and edging.
Here’s Where there’s Room for Improvement
- The head isn’t interchangeable. I would have liked to have been able to pair this device with another head that could do something else in my lawn like a chain saw or hedger.
- So here is where I and Timisha differ. She thinks the pole is a little too long. She’s a little on the short side so she thinks it would be nice to have the option of a shorter pole. Me, I’m perfectly ok with the length of the pole of the trimmer.
My Final Thoughts
A the end of the day, I really like the Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer. It’s a good trimmer. The assembled trimmer is 37.5 inches and for a moment when I first looked at the trimmer, I thought it would be clunky and difficult to manage. But that was not the case. Once you snap the battery in place the trimmer becomes a well-balanced tool. You also have the trimmer strap which you can snap into the loop in front for added control. The Makita 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer lives up to the hype and delivers a punch. And one fully charged battery is more than enough to detail my 1/3 acre lawn.
