How to Repair a Broken or Chipped Tile

So in many homes we have a tiled surface some where, where its on the floor in the kitchen or in the bathroom.  And At some point during the course of living in your home your bound to end up with a broken or chipped tile. It’s kind of inevitable.  The chipped cracked tiles can be an eyesore.  I’m going to show you a quick and easy way of repairing and replacing any broken tiles within 30 minutes.  Knowing this can save you money and the embarrassment of having a broken tile.

  • Grout saw
  • Grout removal tool
  • Pry bar or chisel
  • ¼” Tile and glass drill bit
  • A drill
  • Scraper
  • Putty knife
  • Thin set
  • Grout
  • Trowel
  • Float
  • Replacement tile
  • Bucket
  • Hammer
  • Sponge
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Safety Goggles

Steps

  1. Remove move the grout from around the broken or chipped tile. This is done by running the Grout saw along the grout line then following it up with a grout remover tool.How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas
  2. Once the grout has been removed tape off the adjacent tiles surrounding the broken tile with painter’s tape.  This will help protect the surrounding tiles while you remove the broken tile.  How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas    How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas
  3. Using the drill with the 1/4″ tile/glass bit drill holes into the tile. This will further loosen the tile from the surface. How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas
  4. Take the chisel or pry bar and remove the loose and broken tile.
  5. Clear and remove all broken and excess tile pieces.
  6. Now that the old tile is completely removed you need to create a smooth surface. Scrape away the old thin set from the surface using a putty knife.  How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas
  7. Now its time to install the replacement tile.  Apply thin set to the surface using the trowel.  How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas  How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas
  8. Apply and press the replacement tile to the surface and ensure its spaced properly and level.
  9. Once this is dry (give it at least 4 hours) apply the grout using the float. Wipe away any excess grout and remove the excess haze created during the process.  How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas How to repair a broken tile ToolBox Divas

 

Now you successfully replaced a broken tile in your home.
