How to Instantly Update Your Kitchen Without Spending A Fortune

Often times we think we need to totally gut our kitchen or make drastic changes to add value and update it. However, sometimes all it takes is a fresh coat of paint and adding new hardware to the kitchen cabinets. In this article, I’m going to show how you can instantly add value and update your kitchen without spending a fortune.

My friend, Toni approached me complaining about the state of her kitchen. She felt it was dark, dated and lackluster.  She wanted to do something but didn’t know exactly what to do.  She also didn’t want to spend a lot of money in her kitchen. It had actually been updated 6 or 7 years prior.  I went over to take a look at her space.  It was nice. It was a small galley kitchen in a DC row home.  It had updated cabinets, appliances, and countertop. But it was missing one thing. The cabinets didn’t have any hardware. Hardware is a very easy and relatively inexpensive way to add style to the kitchen.  It’s like putting on the perfect pair of your earrings and necklace. Like your favorite outfit, it can take your kitchen to that next level.

Where To Start

Before starting any project I recommend starting out with a clean decluttered space. So we started with cleaning and clearing the countertop.  We gave the walls and cabinets a good wipe down. We then prepped the space for paint by removing the outlet covers and taping off the trim and ceiling.

The existing paint color was a little on the dark side, so it made the kitchen feel dark and smaller. In, tiny DC row homes, unless you’re in an end unit, your only source of natural light comes from the front and the back of the house.  Light neutral paint colors and mirrors are ways to bounce the light around, making a room feel bigger. We freshen up the walls with a fresh coat of BEHR Premium Plus Pale Cashmere paint. I suggest picking a neutral color that is bright and airy.  Stay away from colors that are not exactly appetizing.  The color should reflect the tone and style of your home and kitchen.

The Hardware

The Liberty Hardware Classic Square Collection

Once the kitchen was clean, decluttered and painted it was time to add style and personality. We went through and counted how many cabinets were above the counter, and we counted how many cabinets and drawers were under the cabinet.  From there we were able to gauge how many knobs or pulls we would need for the project. The Liberty Hardware Classic Square Collection stood out from the start amongst the huge selection of cabinet hardware.  It was modern and sleek and would easily compliment the style and feel of the kitchen cabinets.   We decided to mix the drawer pulls, cups and knobs.  I’m of the school of “no rules.”  There are no standard set rules when it comes to the selection of knobs or pulls.  With the cups and knobs and pulls side by side, each enhanced the overall detail and look of the cabinets. Above the counters, the doors that were easily accessible and standard sized, we used the cabinet pulls.  Knobs were installed on the short cabinet doors above the stove and refrigerator. Below the counters we used the cup pulls on the drawers and knobs on the doors.  The hardware finish was satin nickel.

Tools Needed

Largely, there aren’t a lot of tools required.  This is something that can be accomplished on a weekend.  But here are some of the items we used to accomplish this kitchen update.

Pulling The Kitchen Together

Now that all cabinet knobs and pulls are installed I decided to add floating shelves in the open space between the cabinets. This was a great opportunity to display dishes, adding a decorative element to the kitchen. We touched up the paint, cleaned up the area and put everything back in its place.

Add floating shelves to open areas in a kitchen to display dishes and provide additional storage.

There you have it, by simply updating or adding hardware in our case, and adding a fresh coat of paint, you can instantly update your kitchen without spending a fortune.
