Happy New Year!  It’s Kathy from Up to Date Interiors and I’m thrilled to be back with Tool Box Divas to share an easy winter wreath that will cheer up your front door or wall decor through the long winter months.  I love deep cleaning and organizing after all of the holiday fuss and then adding a few simple winter decorating pieces with easy seasonal DIYs like this winter wreath.  It’s usually when my hygge instincts kick in.   Have you tried creating a hygge space with your decor

If we haven’t meant before, I’m Kathy from Up to Date Interiors.  I’m a recently retired military spouse who moved back to Texas after being gone 19 years.  I’ve perfected the art of rental decorating and overcoming challenges in small spaces the last fifteen years but now we are homeowners and have a new set of challenges! I love infusing colorful global style with DIYs and furnishings in our one-story 60’s ranch style home.

Start with a basic artificial pine wreath from your local craft or dollar store.  This is a great opportunity to strip down an outdated Christmas or other decorated wreath.  You’ll also need white spray paint, velvet ribbon, pinecones, faux berries and leaves, and a hot glue gun with sticks.  Customize your berry and ribbon colors to match your decor!  When I think of winter colors I gravitate toward olive green and wine colors paired with crisp white.

I wanted a frosted look for this wreath, like a cool crisp Texas winter morning with frozen dew on the lawn.   Using a flocking spray or powder is definitely an option but can be time consuming and messy.  Since I already had white spray paint on hand I decided to lighten the dark pine wreath and pinecones with a “dusting” of paint.  It worked like a charm and only needed one light coat.   Hold the can of paint at least two feet from the wreath and spray moving the can steadily around the wreath.  After you paint your wreath and pinecones let them sit for a few minutes until they are dry to the touch.   Look how pretty it is after a quick coat of paint!

Hot glue a grouping of pinecones to the top of your wreath.  Start with larger cones and don’t be afraid to layer smaller ones on top so it looks fuller.

Once you have a quarter of your wreath covered add in a faux leaf stem on each side for extra embellishment.  Stick to silver tone stems like lambs ear or eucalyptus.  Attach a few single pinecones around the rest of the wreath.

You have the option of spraying another light coat of white paint if the wreath is too dark.  Tuck in a few red berry stems to add a pop of color.  I found some on deep clearance after Christmas and they have a bit of glitter on them which goes with my frosted theme.  Attach a velvet bow at the top with a piece of florist wire or hot glue.  Carefully singe the ends of the ribbon with a flame to prevent unraveling.

  1. This is SUCH a great idea! I’ve got a few wreaths that need refreshing after fading in the sun. This is the perfect way to reuse them.
