Hang the Christmas stockings from anywhere, a shelf, a table or mantel.  I love putting up stockings for everyone and loading it with stocking stuffers.  I don’t like putting holes in the mantel to hang the stockings. So this year I decided to make some stocking holders.  I love this project because it allowed me to use some scrap wood and ornaments that I had on hand.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Ok, Let’s Get Crafty!

  1. Cut the pieces to size.  You’ll need 1 – 5in piece and 1- 3in. piece per holder. This works well with boards that are at least 1 in. in thickness.

2.  Sand the boards down.  I’m using reclaimed wood that has a lot of character.  I really liked the existing tone.  So using my DEWALT 20-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander I sanded the pieces to a smooth finish.

3.  Apply stain or beeswax.  Like I mentioned earlier I wanted to keep the tone of the wood so I just applied beeswax.

4. Measure 1 1/2 in. from the front on the 3in. bottom pieces.

This will enable you to line up the top 5in board.

5. Pre drill 2 holes on the bottom of the bottom 3 in. board.

I predrilled the screw through the board so that it peaked through the other side.

This made it easier to screw the boards in place once I flipped it back over.

6. Attach the hook to the front of the holder.

   7. Using a hot glue gun attach the ornament to the front of the holder.

   8. Add a decorative element to the ornament making sure to cover the hole at the top of the ornament.

You can get creative at this step and use anything that you can find.  I took apart a Christmas pick and glued it to the top of the tree to make a star.

Go crazy with this project.  You can attach any type of ornament to the front of the stocking and personalize it for every member of your family.

  1. Hi 👋🏽
I love this and can’t wait to try it for my mantel. My only concern: how do you make sure the holder doesn’t topple over from the weight of the filled stockings?

    1. Thank you! That’s a good question. Double-sided tape. And I don’t. put too much in the stockings
