In this tutorial, I’m showing you how to create a mini cake stand in the shape of a rose.  It’s an excellent decorative element for Valentine’s Day or a Wedding.

Forget the traditional cake stands. For only a few dollars you can make a cake stand that is sure to be a conversation starter at your next party.  Who doesn’t love to receive flowers? For me, I can do flowers any day of the week and it doesn’t have to be a special occasion. But somehow flowers always makes me feel like it more than just another day.  In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a mini cake stand in the shape of a rose that will brighten up any day.  It can be used or even given as a gift on  Valentine’s Day.  This cake stand is an excellent conversation starter at a wedding reception or a bridal shower.

Materials

  • Wooden candlestick
  • Circle plaque
  • wood glue
  • Stain
  • 1×10 board cut at 12in.

Tools

OK Let’s Get Dirty!

Step 1: Cut out the template for the rose.

I used a vector drawing as a template for the rose shape. I printed it out and taped it to the board. The template can be glued to the board, but I used tape because that was the first thing that I could find.  Download the rose vector used as a template: Black and White Rose Vector

Step 2. Cut out the rose top.

Using the bandsaw I carefully cut out the shape of the rose. The rose could be cut out using a jigsaw.

Step 3. Transfer the outline of the rose to the wood top.

Using a graphite pencil I transferred the image of the rose on to the board.  This step could be eliminated if you opt to transfer the image onto the board from the beginning.  I chose to print out the image so that I would have a clear visual image of what I was cutting.

   Step 4. Burning tool.

To add visual interest and depth to the wood, I use the burning tool to outline the image of the rose.

Step 5. Sanding.

I then took the rose top for the cake stand to my combination sander and sanded down any rough spots and smoothed out the edges.

Step 6. Stain.

Here is where the process got really fun.  Did you know that you can use many of the natural elements found in your kitchen to stain wood? You can use beets as a natural stain for wood. Yes, beets.  The same one you use in your morning smoothie.  Beets go along way as a stain or wood dye.  You actually don’t need a lot.  You can cut a piece off and rub it directly on to the board or you can juice it and apply the juice.

I did both to show the versatility of this wonderful antioxidant.  First, you want to raise the grain of the wood by applying a little water.  The apply the beet to the top of the cake stand directly by rubbing the beet on the surface or applying the beet juice to it.  One to 2 coats is all you need.   For the candlestick base and circular plaque, I stained it with a light sage green color by DecoArt.   I wanted it to resemble a rose as much as possible.  So of course the base of the stand had to be green. 🙂

Step 7. Assemble the cake stand.

Once the stain is dry its time to assemble the cake stand.  Using wood glue I placed the candlestick atop the plaque and attached the rose shaped top, wiping away any excess glue.

Step 8. Additional touch-ups.

After allowing the glue to set for 24 hours I found that the cake stand was a little flat and needed a little more visual interest.  So using my Dremel I added more depth by outlining the floral pattern of the rose.

Then I sanded it down and reapplied some beet juice and sealed it.

And That was all it took.  I love the way it turned out.
