Hey Guys, It’s ToolBox Dude. It is Spring again and all eyes are on lawn and garden care.  Milwaukee has an awesome lineup of outdoor tools. And the one that I am the most impressed with is the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer with QUIK-LOK Attachment Capability and 9.0 Ah Battery.  The Quick-lock system is amazing and does what its name implies, quickly lock and releases various attachments from the M18 Quick-lock powerhead.

Included:

  • The M18 FUEL Power Head w/ QUICK-LOK
  • QUIK-LOK String Trimmer Attachment
  • M18 REDLITHIUM HD9.0 Battery
  • and M18 & M12 Rapid Charger

Additional Available Attachments

The attachment system is powered by the M18 fuel platform and there are 4 different tool attachments currently available, as well as a 3-foot extension.
With just one M18 powerhead you can easily switch between an articulating hedge trimmer, a string trimmer, a 10″ pole saw, and an edger.  And if you need some additional reach you can connect the 3′ extension
which goes between the M18 power head and the tool. The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer with QUIK-LOK Attachment Capability is the covers a one battery, one power system all of which are powered by the M18 9.0 ampere-hour (ah) high demand Lithium battery.

The Performance

With one 9.0 ah Lithium high demand battery we put the hedge trimmer, the 10″ pole saw, the string trimmer and the edger to the test, detailing and pruning overgrown edges and
detailing the sidewalk and driveway in our 1/3 acre space.

With everything we did, there was no deterioration in the performance of this tool – an impressive performance.
From my experience with other outdoor lawn power tools, the M18 Quick-lock powerhead and its attachments performed like a gas-driven tool. And I’ll be honest I’ve always been one of those people who refused to go battery operated when it came to outdoor products.  However, I was very pleased. The tool and drive body are well balanced.  The robust Milwaukee M18 FUEL String Trimmer Shoulder Strap only enhanced its stability, making the tool handling more comfortable and less burdensome on the user.

Ease of Use

The QUIK-LOK mechanism provides positive feedback – it clicks when the attachment is connected to the M18 powerhead. You know without a doubt the M18 powerhead and attachment are aligned.  All you do before springing into action is to tighten the secondary thumb screw clamp on the drive head. There is no wobbling or shaking with or without the 3’extension. So you can forget the ladder.  The extension makes it safer to reach those high tall places.

The hedge trimmer attachment is a sophisticated piece of engineering – the articulation action in no ways take away from the performance of the tool and it is razor sharp and tackles green and
dried shrubs with the same ease.

Adjusting the angle is very easy but you will need both hands to do this in order for the spring tension on the articulation mechanism hinges pin to release. Once the hinge pin is pulled back the articulating head moves very smoothly to the working angle you want. There are 13 different operating angles that you can choose from that allows you up to 270 degrees of rotation.
There are also 14 position storage positions. The 20-inch blade has a 1-inch cut capacity and the shaft has a rubber padded grip, making for easy handling.

M18 FUEL QUIK-LOK String Trimmer Attachment

The string trimmer attachment includes easy load bump feed trimmer head which allows you to load up to 25 feet of line without taking the trimmer head apart. Line up the red lines on the trimmer head slide the line through the two holes, pull the ends until they are even then twist the head while holding the base until all the line is wound up. You can run a 14” or 16” diameter cut just by flipping the cutter on the guard 180 degrees. Milwaukee’s recommended maximum diameter trimmer line is 095.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL QUIK-LOK 10 in. Pole Saw Attachment

The pole saw attachment is probably the best attachment of all (Just my opinion).  I could cut really high limbs from the trees in my yard that were in serious need of pruning.  I didn’t need to risk getting on a ladder to do this.  There didn’t notice any kickback and it was extremely easy to hold steady.

Final Thoughts

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer with QUIK-LOK Attachment Capability and 9.0 Ah Battery itself is a great value.  Its initial investment is $329 for the base kit.  But when you add up the value of all the attachments and compare it to how much a landscaper would charge, it pays for itself in 1 Summer. This is an excellent system for homeowners and professional landscapers. So take a trip to your local Home Depot and introduce yourself to the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer and all its with QUIK-LOK Attachments.  You will not be disappointed at all.
