Using Fabric for Wall Art

Decorating a new space or updating an old space can be a bit of a daunting task at times.  And despite the affordable options in stores like Homegoods and Target, it can get expensive really quick. And then you’re also faced with the possibility of walking into a friend’s home and seeing the exact same print that you may have bought from a popular store on their walls.  I’m going to show you how to avoids high costs while achieving a unique look that matches the style and personality of your home using fabric.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Steps

  1. Cut the fabric down to the size of the frame you’ll be using.
  2. Tape the stencil to the center of the fabric.
  3. You can use a disposable plate to squeeze the paint out on.  Stencil the fabric using the fabric paint and allow time for it to dry.
  4. You can also layer the various stencils to create an artistic scene.  You just want to make sure the paint is dry before layering the stencils.
  5. Once all the pieces are dry proceed with framing the fabric.                Don’t be afraid to use various patterns and colors. The matte frame actually unifies the various fabric pieces.  The sky’s the limit by just how creative you can be with this.
  6. Finally, hang your frames in a pattern on your wall based on the size and the number of frames you decide to put up.  I recommend using a self-leveling laser level when putting up the frames.  It really does make the job go by faster and seamless.

You can use a laser level like this Bosch 30 ft. Self-Leveling Cross-Line Laser Level

Want to mix it up even more? Check out our “Live After Live.”  You can also decorate the actual picture frames using acrylic paint markers.

Ok so no excuse for any more blank bare walls

  1. I would have never thought about using fabric for wall art. This is such a cute idea that does make decorating a new space less daunting. There’s a part of me that wishes I wasn’t so busy, so I’d have more time to create things like this. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find similar wall art that this just as unique for my home.
