DIY Chalkboard Halloween Sign

Halloween is in a few days and its time to transform my front door into something  a little more spooktacular. Well… at least something the kids will like. 🙂

I’m normally not a big decorator when it comes to Halloween.  I’ve just never really gotten into it.  It’s a little too dark for my liking.  But I do enjoy giving out treats to the kids in the neighborhood.  So I figured I’d let the tricker treaters in on this years menu. Here is a simple Halloween Chalkboard Door Hang. Let’s the kid’s know what your serving and even let them know when you’re all out.

Supplies

  • 2 – 1×2 @ 13.5″
  • 2 – 1×2 @ 12″
  • 12″x 12″ (This can be 1/4 or 1/2 plywood but keep it light)
  • Rustoleum Clear Chalkboard Paint
  • Buttercream acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Ribbon (1.5″ in width)
  • Roofing nails

Optional: Halloween stickers and stencils

sign supplies  Start by cutting the pieces to size.

paint the chalk board and side trim  Paint the base and side trim pieces.

paint nails spray paint nails   While the paint dries take the roofing nails and lightly hammer it into a scrap piece of wood.  This will allow even coverage of spray paint and allow it to dry quickly.

Once the base and trim 1×2 pieces are dry its time to assemble the sign.  I used a nail gun but this project can be completed with a hammer and nails..  Once attached I flipped the sign over and sanded the top of the sign in an effort  to create a rustic distressed look.

Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth and apply the Clear Chalkboard Paint.

Once the chalkboard paint dries its time to attach the ribbon.  This project works when the ribbon the the width of the side trim and the boards are light weight. Starting at the bottom of the board place two nails on 3 sides of the chalkboard sign.

And when its all gone, I can simply wipe away the menu and change the sign.  I love chalkboard paint!

Till Next Time! Happy Halloween! ~T.
